How To Set Up Unity For Mixed Reality Development

So you not only want to escape reality, you want to make your own reality. I know how you feel. To get started you are going to need the latest version of unity found here, and the Mixed Reality Toolkit by Microsoft found here. Now you can also make Hollow lens experiences with this toolkit but for now we are just using the MR functionality. To download the kit you just go to the page I linked and navigate to the getting started guide where you will find a download link to the latest version of the plugin. Just a note, besides the aforementioned link you will find another link to the officially supported version of unity, you may have better luck but I was not able to get my app to work/build using that version, hence my recommendation for the latest version of unity.

Once you have downloaded everything, open up Unity and in the toolbar go to Assets>Import Package>Custom Package then open to wherever your you downloaded the MR toolkit to and select it.

Once it is done and you have clicked accept on all the pop-ups, you will notice that there is a new button on your toolbar:

On the dropdown list, there are three options we are going to use the most, the first two are in the configure section, Apply Mixed Reality Project Settings, and Apply Mixed Reality Scene Settings. The other is Build Window.

For now, we are going to focus on the first two. First, click: Apply Mixed Reality Project Settings. This will configure your project settings to the best settings for MR, For now, I suggest selecting all the options since then you will be good to do whatever you want. After that do the same with Apply Mixed Reality Scene Settings, this will set up your scene for you.

At this point, you should be able to hook up your MR headset and click the play button to test your app. Good luck!
